The Magic Yarn Project logoDuring the September 24, 2024 Palomar District Fundraiser, Sunflower Tea, a speaker from The Magic Yarn Project (TMYP) will talk about their group. At Woman’s Club of Vista, we need a committee chairman who is willing to coordinate this project for our members.

The Magic Yarn Project’s mission is to create magic in the lives of children battling cancer, and to inspire volunteerism to help make a difference. It does this by providing whimsical, giggle-inducing character wigs and beanies that invite children into the world of imagination and play during difficult times. Thanks to their generous donors, wigs are always free for the families who receive them.

Founder Holly Christensen, an oncology nurse, started The Magic Yarn Project in 2015 when a friend’s daughter was diagnosed with cancer. Knowing how difficult it would be for her to lose her beautiful blonde curls, Holly made her a Rapunzel yarn wig and sent it in the mail, and the little girl was overcome with joy.

After realizing other little girls in the hospital would love to have such a special gift, Holly started making other wigs and soon posted a request for yarn on Facebook. Demand and interest were immediate, and soon after, The Magic Yarn Project was born, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. TMYP is the original and the largest organization making yarn wigs for children with medical hair loss.

TMYP has received thousands of photos and stories from grateful parents, telling us how much it meant to their child to feel comfortable and playful again. Children wear them in bed when they are too sick to play, and they wear them for courage during medical procedures.

Contact Liz if you’d like to be part of this project. The District plans to purchase the yarn, and helpers will demonstrate how to crochet the beanies and wigs. Find out more about this worthy cause at https://themagicyarnproject.com/
