My theme this year reflects the image of the hummingbird – “Grace in Motion, Power In Flight,” let’s all be like lovely hummingbirds – beautiful to look at and a powerful force when we join together!
It must be October! Footballs are flying through the air, the days are getting shorter, the line at Starbucks for a Pumpkin Latte is getting longer and Nancy Jones is running around getting ready for the Fall Fun Festival. If only the weather would cool off so I could wear my Halloween sweatshirt! Fall also means getting back into the swing of the new Club Year! We had great turnouts at both our Day meeting in our new home at the Methodist Church and our WCV @ Night meeting at the Elks Lodge – and we had several guests at both meetings who showed interest in joining our ranks. Go team!
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Many of our members have been touched by breast cancer either themselves or a family member. For our first time ever, we will be making heart-shaped comfort pillows for women who have recently had surgery. Beyond the anatomical fit, the symbolic shape offers a comforting gesture of love and solidarity to patients during a challenging recovery. We hope to make 30 pillows so please come and bring your fabric scissors!
We have also been asked by the United Methodist Church to be a part of their family friendly Trunk or Treat Halloween event. If you are able to, please donate a bag of candy because they are expecting lots of kids. WCV @ Night will be bagging the candy and we are asking for volunteers to help hand out the candy from 3pm to 5pm Halloween afternoon.
WCV @ Night will be a Halloween party so wear your witch hat! We are currently planning to meet again at the Elks Club. The food was great and we will be picking our Flocks for the upcoming Club Year. Come find out what the flocks are all about!
Additional volunteer opportunities have been pouring into my email. The VUSD needs volunteers for their literacy program “Reading Pals,” and a new organization called “Brighter Bites” needs volunteers on a weekly basis to bag fruits and vegetables at the Boys & Girls Club. Look for more information on these two programs in October.
Thank you to everyone who has been working behind the scenes and on the frontline to make our club the best it can be! Let’s keep the momentum going in October! See you all soon!
Liz Franciscus
