In November, the Book Club read The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon – we all agreed that it was a great read – a real page turner based on the life of midwife Martha Ballard. The novel takes place in Maine in 1789 during one of the worst winters in history. The book is not only a compelling “who done it” but also revealed the stark inequalities between men and women and the justice system in colonial America.
