The GFWC Day of Service 2024 is all about tackling food insecurity, and WCV registered to participate in this cause. Donna D. signed our group up to work a Saturday afternoon shift at the North County Food Bank (NCFB) warehouse in Vista. Liz announced it in the newsletter. WCV members brought their non-perishable food donations to the September meetings, and Liz and others carried them to the Food Bank. So far, $110 worth of food has been donated to NCFB.
On September 21, the fun began. Eleven WCV members showed up for the warehouse shift in their closed-toe shoes, many wearing their WCV Has Heart t-shirts. We were given an orientation and instructions, then it was time to get to work. Linda was our shift supervisor, and she was handling a total of three teams during our shift.
Our task was to fill bags for the pantry. Most of us worked assembly-line style, each contributing one to two food item(s) to the fishnet bag that was being passed down. Sonja tied them off, and Sylvia carefully placed them in the large bins. We were so fast that three people including Wendy, were assigned to keep our table stocked, open the boxes, remove any shrink wrap, and break down the empty cardboard boxes. Before the end of the shift, we were running out of items, having emptied the table as well as the pallets in front of us.
Together, we contributed 21 hours of service and more importantly, filled two huge bins to overflowing with our pantry bags that will be available to needy families in the North County area.
