Two members from our club went to the Soroptimist Anti-Human Trafficking Collaborative on July 10, 2025 to hear Marjorie Saylor from One Safe Place, North County Justice Center, and Penny Harrington (Soroptimist). Marjorie (Care Coordinator/Director of Human Trafficking Services and Awareness/Legal Liaison) gave a brief history of legislation and how it has impacted trafficking in our country, state and more specifically in San Diego, which has higher rates of labor trafficking. She also gave an update on AB 379. One Safe Place opened 3 years ago and has helped over 8,000 individuals with some kind of victimization (domestic violence, child abuse, human trafficking, elder abuse, identity theft, etc.). She ended with encouraging churches and groups to host awareness events to help stop or decrease the violence and encouraging us to make phone calls to our representatives. Penny updated the group on legislation that needs support. She encouraged us to contact State Senator Catherine Blakespear at 916-651-4038 to help support AB 379 (supports help for victims) which is on the Senate Floor. Congress is recessed for July and August.

If you are interested in touring One Safe Place in San Marcos, please contact me. I can help set up a group tour.

The next Soroptimist Anti-Human Trafficking Collaborative is on October 9, 2025 at 9:00 am.

Are you cleaning out your closets? GFWC’s focus for International Day of Service in September is Domestic & Sexual Violence. WCV is holding a gently used clothing and shoe drive to benefit God’s Heart Ministry/Las Valientes, a local non-profit organization dedicated to providing legal and other services to protect survivors of domestic violence and their children. Please donate any clean, bagged items at any of our meetings or contact me donnaW@thewomansclubofvista.org.
